The Manufacturing, trade & exporting industry in our region...

The manufacturing industry accounts for approximately 4% of GDP and 6% of total employment in the province (compared to about 14% of GDP add 11% of employment nationally). The industry is comprised of many businesses that produce a wide variety of products.

The fabrication and manufacturing sector continues to grow and contribute to the economic growth in this region. There are several large metal fabrication and ship building projects on the horizon including; the Hebron Project, Vale's Long Harbour Development, and additional ferries for the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. At the Hebron Public Review session in Marystown on November 22, 2011 Kiewit was asked to bid on the drilling support module. Hebron project manager Geoff Parker said the topsides piece will be the largest and most complex piece of offshore construction ever to be built at the yard.

Consistent, long-term work at the KOS facility will benefit small to medium size businesses and increase opportunities to access the industry supply chain.

how we're involved:

The Town of Fortune is the nearest major town to the French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, and is the port from which trade with the islands is carried on. The Harbour Authority of Fortune was established in 1988 as a non-profit organization. The mandate of the Harbour Authority is to supervise, control and maintain the use of infrastructure and the surrounding on-land area, owned by Small Crafts and Harbours. The Port of Fortune is utilized by various industry sectors including: fisheries, tourism, and international trade and export.

Since 1988, the Harbour Authority of Fortune, with funding support from ACOA, IBRD and Small Crafts and Harbours has administered numerous enhancement projects with respect to the area’s harbour and docking services. Projects include: wharf repairs, extension and modification to the fisherman’s shed, harbour dredging and more recently the addition of a new marina consisting of 12 new floating docks (increasing the number of floating docks to 24), road construction, installation of guardrails, and a marshaling yard.

Presently, the Harbour Authority, with support from SRDC, is exploring avenues to move forward with the final enhancement project outlined in its 10 year plan.
